There's Someone Inside Your House Image

From the killer's themed costume to the action set pieces to the actual reason the killer is killing, There's Someone Inside Your House is a haze of slasher malaise. It's also wildly inconsistent with its gimmick, messaging, and tone, wanting to be a Scream-style meta mystery, a Heathers-style high school satire, and a dramatic redemption story all at once. It's so algorithmically thrown together that even the titular premise/promise -- of someone being in someone's house -- doesn't even hold for more than one kill.

There's Someone Inside Your House image

Admittedly, There's Someone Inside Your House is a good title for a film looking to play around with tropes and get a bit winky and clever with set pieces. But what we get is a flat, muddled mess that fails because it just wants to have everything. It wants to have someone run through a house, but also a church. And a school. And a corn maze. Oh, and the corn is on fire like in Freddy vs. Jason. And the dad is a cruel real estate developer like in Heathers. And the deputy is a suspect like in Scream. And people are killed in ways fitting their individual hangups like in A Nightmare on Elm Street. It wants very much to be all the things, but in that effort it loses any semblance of a satisfying story.

But there's another movie that aired on Netflix around the same time that didn't receive as much attention as the trilogy. Produced by James Wan and Shawn Levy, There's Someone Inside Your House combines the best of Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer to give fans a delightfully thrilling slasher. Like Fear Street, it is also a bone-chilling book adaptation with plenty of action to keep you glued to your seat. The action starts when Makani Young (Sydney Park) moves to the quiet town of Osborne, Nebraska. She falls in with a friend group and begins to navigate the social moors of high school when one of her fellow students is murdered, and a video of him attacking a gay classmate is sent to everyone on campus. The student body is shaken, and wild speculation begins about the victim and his assailant. Sure enough, more students continue to die as a killer that wears a mask resembling the face of each victim releases scandalous information about each person they kill. Friendships are tested and lives are lost as Makani tries to outrun her past and the vicious killer that's targeting her.

Then there's Ollie (played by Pellerin), the class outcast whose classmates are quick to blame due to his shady past surrounding his parents. Students even tag his locker "Murderer" in the juicy second act (see cover image above). Zach Sandford (Dale Whibley), whose wealthy father is bankrupting the town, also points the finger at Ollie because Ollie's brother is in law enforcement and could have helped conceal the deeds. Zach also points the finger at his own father, however, given their troubled relationship and the fact that his dad could have killed Jackson to obtain the family's land.

Netflix has added a new slasher horror film to its queue just in time for Halloween! Based on the 2017 novel by Stephanie Perkins, There's Someone Inside Your House centers on the graduating class at Osborne High, who are being stalked by a killer hellbent on exposing their darkest secrets and terrorizing them while wearing masks of their faces. The film stars Sydney Park, Th\u00e9odore Pellerin, Asjha Cooper, Dale Whibley, Jesse LaTourette, Diego Josef, Burkely Duffield, Sarah Dugdale, William MacDonald, Andrew Dunbar, and Markian Tarasiuk. Despite the movie's terrifying premise, the cast all seem to have formed a real bond, celebrating birthdays, going out for dinners, and just having a whole lot of fun together.
